Having visitors around is alway a very good reason to become a tourist in your own region and see places in a different way.

My mum and sister came over last week to visit me in Switzerland for some days. As the weather was stunning, we decided to spend the Saturday in Lucerne, one of the most famous and beautiful cities of Switzerland, doing all the things a tourist should do.

Leaving the main station of Lucerne you are already welcomed by probably one of the most famous bridges in the world. It’s the oldest wooden bridge in Europe. The Kapellbrücke was build 1365 to connect the old town with the new town.

At the same side of the river there is also the “Jesuitenkirche” (jesuit church) which is the oldest baroque church of Switzerland built in 1666. Unfortunately, there were huge renovation works going on so we just glimpsed inside. But the interior must be stunning and classical concerts take place here on a regular base.

Stepping out of the church we found ourselves in the middle of a farmers market which was situated just along the Reuss riverside promenade. We could`t resist and stopped to buy some nice autumn flowers, a selection of cheese to make a nice fondue back home and – almost obligatory – “heissi Maroni” (roasted chestnuts).DSCF7859

Eating our chestnuts, we slowly walked over the wooden bridge to enjoy the various views around us.

We walked through the historic center and had no chance to concentrate on all the nice shops as we were constantly distracted by the beautiful facades of the houses hosting them.

Finally we arrived at the lake and just sat down to enjoy the stunning view.

Before heading back home, we made the obligatory visit at the lion of lucerne. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution.
